You know that feeling when you watch a woman in your industry walk into a room and own it completely? When she speaks and people lean in. When she holds her ground without apology. When she leads in a way that looks so natural you catch yourself thinking, I wish I had that.
Most high-achieving women chalk that up to admiration. Or worse, they turn it into evidence of everything they feel they are still lacking.
What if that longing is actually pointing you directly to your next level?
What Positive Projection Really Is
In Jungian psychology, we talk a lot about projection in the shadow context, specifically the qualities in others that trigger or irritate us pointing back to parts of ourselves we have not yet integrated. Projection works in both directions.
Positive projection is when we see a quality in someone else and feel deeply drawn to it. We admire it. We put that person on a pedestal because of it. We quietly wonder why it seems to come so easily to them and so hard to us.
Here is what that admiration is actually telling you: you could not recognize that quality if it did not already exist in you. The recognition itself is the evidence.
That longing is not lack. It is an invitation to meet yourself more fully. To discover what is already there.
Why This Matters As a Female Leader
When you stay focused on the comparison, on the gap between where someone else is and where you are, that quality feels like it belongs to them. Not to you.
The moment you shift your perspective and recognize that what you see in them is already living in you, everything changes. It stops feeling like something you have to chase and starts feeling like something you simply have to claim.
Here is where to begin.
Three Ways to Start Owning What Is Already Yours
1️⃣ Notice who you admire and name the quality specifically. Not just "she is confident" but what kind of confident? How does it show up? The more specific you are, the more useful the information becomes.
2️⃣ Find where that quality already shows up in you. Even in small ways. Even inconsistently. It is there. Journalling this is powerful — write about a time you embodied even a fraction of that quality and let yourself acknowledge it fully, rather than dismissing it.
3️⃣ Give yourself permission to turn it up. Embodiment is not a switch you flip. It is a practice you return to daily. Start small — try it for just one meeting today, or even one full work day. Notice how it feels when you stop waiting for that quality to arrive and simply let it show up. You might surprise yourself.
It may feel uncomfortable at first. That discomfort is simply resistance showing up, and resistance always has a purpose. The deeper the work, the stronger it tends to appear. So if it feels significant, that is not a reason to stop. That is a sign you are standing at the edge of something that really matters.
Own What Has Always Been Yours
You may not fully realize it yet, but the foundation is already set. Everything you have been admiring, reaching for, and wishing you had more of — it is not out there somewhere. It has been in you the whole time, waiting for you to stop looking past it.
That is not a small thing. That is everything.
